At Horse Riders Classics, we offer a wide selection of riding helmets from top brands. As you would expect, our range includes helmets from the best names in the market: Samshield, Kask and Suomy. The most important feature of a helmet is safety, but how do you ensure that a helmet fits correctly and offers proper protection? We are happy to explain.
Measuring your head size
If you have not worn the brand you are about to order before, we recommend measuring your head size first. Use a measuring tape or tailor’s tape for this. Your current helmet size is not always a reliable reference. Ideally, ask someone else to measure your head to prevent the tape from slipping or tilting.
- Place the measuring tape just above your ears and measure the circumference of your head.
- Make sure the tape fits snugly around your head: not too tight, but also not loose.
- Round the measurement up to the nearest whole number. For example, a circumference of 55.5 cm equals size 56.
Helmet shell sizes
Now that you have measured your head circumference, you can determine which helmet shell size you need. Most brands offer shell sizes S, M and L, but some brands work with only two shell sizes or even four. Always consult the size chart to see which shell size corresponds to your head measurement.

As an example, let’s take size 56. With Kask, you would need shell size S (also called size 1). With Equiline, size M is required. With Samshield and Freejump, you can choose between size S and M. This can be confusing, as each brand uses its own sizing system. If your Samshield size fits into two shell sizes, consider the following:
- Still growing? Choose size M.
- Fully grown with a narrow head shape? Choose size S.
- Fully grown with a rounder head shape? Choose size M.
- Do you wear your hair under your helmet? Choose size M and a larger liner. Keep in mind that helmets may shift more easily when wearing hair underneath. We recommend using a hair net.
- Choose a liner that matches the shell size: for shell size S choose liner 56S, for shell size M choose liner 56M.
What is a liner?
As mentioned earlier, the liner is the inner padding of your riding helmet. It provides comfort and absorbs sweat, making it an essential part of your helmet.
The liner is attached to the helmet using press studs or Velcro, ensuring it stays securely in place. All liners are machine washable, helping to keep your helmet clean and fresh for longer.
A liner is always included free of charge with your riding helmet, so don’t forget to add it in the correct size. Without a liner, the helmet cannot be used properly. Our system will prompt you to select the correct liner automatically. Would you like an extra liner, for example if you ride with a ponytail at home and wear your hair under your helmet at competitions? Additional liners are available separately.
