The hackamore is used for riding without a bit. The hackamore has a lever action and puts pressure on the nose and behind the ears. When taking the reins, the space between the nose and chin strap becomes smaller and this creates pressure on the nose. The shanks provide pressure behind the ears. The longer the shanks of the hackamore, the stronger the effect. Due to the lever action, this is a fairly sharp bit and therefore not suitable for the inexperienced rider.

Due to this anatomical shape, the bit fits better in the mouth and the pressure is better distributed.
